Maths Anxiety Is Real — and It's Not About Being Bad at Maths

Millions of people avoid maths not because they can't do it, but because of how it was taught. Here's what the research says — and what actually helps.

Ask someone if they're "a maths person" and most will answer immediately. The ones who say yes will often describe a specific teacher or moment when things clicked. The ones who say no will almost always describe a specific moment of failure — a test, a classroom humiliation, a parent who told them maths "wasn't for them."

Maths anxiety is real, measurable, and remarkably common. And it's almost never actually about maths.

What maths anxiety is

Maths anxiety is a feeling of tension, apprehension, or fear when faced with mathematical tasks. It's physiologically measurable — brain scans show that for people who experience it, maths problems activate the same brain regions associated with physical pain.

Research by Sian Beilock and others has found that maths anxiety affects working memory: when anxious, people literally have less cognitive capacity available for the problem itself. This creates a cruel feedback loop — anxiety causes poor performance, which confirms the belief that "I can't do maths," which increases anxiety.

Where it comes from

Maths anxiety is almost always learned, not innate. Common origins include:

Timed tests. Speed and mathematical understanding are not the same thing. Timed tests select for those who are comfortable under pressure, not those who understand the material — and they consistently produce anxiety in capable students.

Public failure. Being asked to solve a problem in front of peers, getting it wrong, and experiencing embarrassment is a reliable way to create lasting negative associations with the subject.

Transmitted anxiety. Teachers or parents who express anxiety about maths pass it on. Studies show that maths-anxious teachers produce more maths-anxious students by the end of the year.

Fixed mindset framing. "You're just not a maths person" is one of the most damaging things you can say to a child. Mathematical ability is not fixed. It is developed.

What actually helps

The research on treating maths anxiety points in a consistent direction:

Reduce the stakes. Low-pressure practice — where mistakes are expected and unremarkable — gradually desensitises the anxiety response. The brain learns that mathematical thinking isn't dangerous.

Expressive writing. Beilock's research found that students who spent ten minutes writing about their feelings before a maths test showed significant improvement in performance. Simply articulating the anxiety reduces its grip.

Growth mindset. Teaching students that the brain changes through effort — that struggling with a problem is what learning looks like — reduces anxiety and improves persistence. This isn't motivational fluff; it's neuroscience.

Success experiences. Early wins matter. Working at the right level — challenging but achievable — builds the confidence that resets the negative associations.

Separation from identity. "I got this wrong" and "I'm bad at maths" are not the same statement. Helping learners separate performance from identity breaks the cycle.

A note for parents

If your child says they hate maths or can't do it, resist the urge to agree or to share your own maths anxiety. Mathematical confidence is fragile and remarkably responsive to environment.

The message that works: "You can't do this *yet*. Let's figure out where it gets confusing."
